Letter to the Editor: Education is key, and Edwards is candidate for delegate who can help

Providing a free public education to our citizens is one of the most important government roles. Education exposes people to systems of learning and wide concepts about the world in which they live. Training provides people skills to perform specific tasks. Education helps people understand the world in which they live while training provides them with the means by which to lead productive lives and provide for themselves, their families, and their future.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides some interesting data. Unemployment rates for people with high school diplomas is much less than for those without the credential. Also, many of the fastest growing jobs in the U.S. do not require college but do require a diploma and professional certification.

Virginia recognizes two primarily academic diplomas neither of which typically leads to a certification in an employment field. Educators are recognizing that there is a need for a more diverse set of educational/ training tracks, including one or two for people more attuned to entering the work force after high school. Ask your school division leadership what they think about a technical diploma.

Making improvements to improve how Virginians educate and train the next generations will help them adjust to the forces of computerization, globalization, and productivity increases. Careful changes with emphasis on measurable outcomes will require legislators with experience, intelligence, and energy.

In November, you can choose the delegate with the most qualifications to actively help educate the young people of the 20th District and Virginia. Mr. Bell is a nice man with a thin legislative history. Michelle Edwards is younger and more experienced. Make a good choice. Demand measurable results. It’s your duty.
