Letter to the Editor: Michele Edwards would bring fresh approach to Richmond

Our next election is coming in November when we elect a representative to the House of Delegates. Few voters have turned out for past elections for this purpose. In 2015, only about 17,000 voters of 88,000 registered cast a vote for their delegate.

In the Gettysburg address, Abraham Lincoln declared “…government of the people, by the people, for the people should not perish from the earth.” Elections are where we, the people, express our will. It is our duty to vote. The price of liberty is eternal vigilance so it is not enough to vote without understanding the issues. Democracy is hard, and elections are how the people keep democracy alive. Being an informed voter is a duty and a way to serve your country.

The institutions of democracy evolve and change like other things in our world. Institutions must serve society. Elections are the vehicles for improvements in how our institutions serve us. Whether you are satisfied with the status quo or would like to see improvements in our society, the election is the vehicle to express your wishes. Yes, this election matters; so vote in this election as an informed voter.

Michele Edwards is a candidate for Delegate to represent the Virginia 20th District. She has lived in Staunton for almost 18 years and raised her family here. She has been a special education teacher in Augusta County Schools and has experience with the needs of society through working with organizations in Haiti. She brings a fresh approach to improving state government support for the people of the 20th District. I hope you’ll get to know her as the better candidate for the House of Delegates.

MICHAEL CATHEY
