Letter to the Editor: Edwards would bring a fresh approach to the General Assembly

NewsLeaderI am pleased to add my voice of support for the candidacy of Michele Edwards for the 20th District House of Delegates. I did not know Michele personally before she entered the race, so I contacted her from her website and asked if we could meet for coffee. She graciously made time for me. Our conversation covered a wide-range of issues that affect both the Commonwealth and our local communities.

She was refreshingly candid about the challenges she will face as a new delegate, but has already been doing her homework and has educated herself about legislation that will need to be decided in the near term, as well as long term. She is intelligent, thoughtful, and she really listens to all ideas before forming an opinion.

She is a values-based and principled candidate. Her leadership style is collaborative; she emphasized to me that one of her top priorities will be to counter the hyper-partisan climate in Richmond by reaching across the aisle to find common ground within the different perspectives in the assembly. In other words, I am convinced she will put principle above any party line, something that is desperately needed in Richmond (not to mention Washington!) to move forward for the good of all citizens.

It is time to bring fresh eyes on the problems Virginia faces and fresh ideas for solutions. For too long, we have had too many uncontested races, where the incumbents are not required to publicly debate the issues or explain their records to the citizens. With gratitude for her courage and dedication to citizens in the 20th District, I will vote enthusiastically for Michele Edwards on Nov. 7 and hope you will too!
