Letter to the Editor: Edwards would make lasting change as delegate

I put the event together without knowing any background on four out of the five women on the panel. I only knew that they were willing to share how poverty has impacted them.

By the end of the event I knew that all five were victims of domestic violence.

I sobbed as I listened to their stories and wondered, "How many more?"

Aside from the five women on the panel, how many more victims sat there?

Every audience member, every woman in that room, was a potential victim. Not one man attended.

The frustration and outrage in the room were palpable. Each woman on that panel not only struggled with poverty, she could directly link many of her struggles to abuse and violence suffered at the hands of a man.

I began to wonder. If we as a community are to fight for change, if we are to tackle the misguided legislation that repeatedly fails women across the state of Virginia, how many men would we have to go through? How many men would we have to convince that there is even a problem before they act?

I spent all weekend wondering where to begin.

And then I received a message from Michele Edwards, Democratic candidate running for state delegate here in the 20th District. An attendee of the event contacted Michele with her concerns, and Michele asked if I could meet for coffee.

She listened as I told her the women's stories.

She spoke to me about her ideas for our community and how we can work together to move forward and fight for changes. Especially for women and their children.

I truly believe that change begins on a local level. And that Michele Edwards as our representative in the Virginia House of Delegates is an important step towards real, lasting change.
